Most of the central pipe network used a "push" model where sources (i.e. farms) would send items into the system and RP2 was configured to automatically route items throughout the base. This is in contrast to a "pull" model where items are stored at their sources and then requested when they are needed (which would have killed the server with RP2).

Item distribution units were used as a middleman between sources and sinks in order to distribute items evenly across sinks.
