How do I start a new village and attract villagers?

You can breed villagers if you have at least two villagers, so the real difficulty is to find two villagers. There are two ways that you can get villagers to start a new village:

1. Find two villagers in an existing village and transport them using boats and minecarts.
2. Come across randomly-spawned zombie villagers and cure them using a potion of weakness followed by a golden apple. Be careful: zombie villagers burn in the sun.
