It is required for our modded servers, because it downloads the necessary modpacks that you need to connect to our servers. We may be running a public pack, but we've also added some extra mods too.
You do not need it for our vanilla servers, but it is recommended as it comes with support for shaders, mini-maps, and other useful tweaks.
