  • Alice was down due to a crash bug in PowerConverters.
  • Desertcraft has been removed on the server as it appears to be too buggy. It is still installed on the client for now.
  • Water strainers are re-patched to not crash. As far as I can see, they still function (at least with piped in water).

A member on the server found an nasty exploit that let people login as other players (that had migrated their Minecraft account to a Mojang account) but unfortunately, knowledge of the exploit spread like wildfire yesterday. The exploit allowed people to login to servers as the server owner or even as Notch, able to give themselves permissions to do all sorts of damage. The events culminated into the shutdown of Mojang's login session servers several hours in to the drama, and that's where we stand now. If you get a 503 error or an internal error when trying to join, it's because of the login session servers being unavailable. Please login using offline mode (check "Offline" mode under "More options" in the launcher), but you will need your server-registered password on hand.

This is also a reminder to keep your registered password current. To set your password (once you are in), you have to use [typed]/register your_password[/typed].

Now that some people have had to work with chunk registration and its effects, what are some problems and annoyances that you have had?

I'm considering later adding some "on-the-fly" temporary chunk leases, which would allow timers and whatnot to work while the lease is active. The lease would be placed on placement of affected blocks. This way you can quickly play with the blocks for whatever need without having to buy the chunk.

You will now need to register chunks in order for certain blocks to properly "think," which allows us to later mark chunks as inactive as players stop playing, which gives a huge performance boost for everyone else and avoids the need for a world reset. At the moment, the only blocks affected are RP2 timers and IC2 nuclear reactors, but this list is subject to change as needed. While world anchors are not affected yet, they may be need to be in an owned chunk in the near future.

Chunks only cover an area of 16 by 16 blocks, which may mean that some people may have found it a challenge to register their entire area. For that reason, the price of a chunk has been lowered to a mere 1-2 coal coke pieces per chunk, so please register as much of your land as you can. Register any world anchor chunks too while at it.

No plans are in the works to cover pipes under this restriction, primarily because they can be extremely irritating to manage if you need to own their corresponding chunks. However, if we were to restrict them, the server would run even faster because they use a sizable portion of CPU at the moment — although already drastically reduced due to some recent optimizations.

Also, mobs are back on. Some mobs have been retarded, and will only become reactive once they start wanting to kill you.

In summary:
  • You have to register chunks to make timers and some other blocks work.
  • Chunks have become much cheaper to buy.
  • Pipes are not restricted at this time.
  • World Anchors are not affected yet, but register their chunks.
  • Mobs are back on, but some are dumbed down until they target you.

It is now possible to claim chunks as your on Alice, which provides protection on blocks and items within your area. In the future, it will tell the server that you still play, so that it will permit machines and whatnot to run (as of right now, that feature is not yet enabled and so machines will always run anywhere).
  • To select an area, use a piece of flint and left click to select point 1, and right click to select point 2. You do not need to worry about the height or Y-coordinate, as practically the entire chunk will be yours.
  • To claim the area, you need to type /claim [<friends-list>] in chat. You will have to confirm the purchase. The first four chunks are free, but the chunks thereafter will have a cost of coal coke. You can specify a friends list now (or later), which will allow your teammates to also access the given chunks.
  • To unclaim, use /unclaim. This does not have confirmation.
  • To change the friends list, select the area containing the chunks that you want to modify and use /ownership set-friends <friends-list> to change the friends list.
  • To view the owner of a chunk, use /bind owner and left click blocks to display the owner information. Use /unbind to unbind the tool.
  • Below the Y coordinate of 40 (always subject to change), certain blocks are mineable and placeable, such as stone and ores.
  • Advanced Machines and furniture are currently not properly protected.
  • Please do not claim chunks of other peoples' homes. That kind of behavior is subject to punishment.
  • Owned chunks do not stay loaded. You have to use chunk loaders. Chunk loaders are not subject to any change with this addition.

If you are not familiar with friends lists, you can create lists of other players that can be used in both lock signs and with owned chunks.
  • To create a new friends list, use /friends create <name>
  • To add friends to the list, use /friends add <name> <player>
  • You can set some players as 'managers', which allows them to also change the list. Use /friends add -m <name> <player>

Here's a status update on chunk registration: the code for it is pretty much done, and it's likely to be implemented within the next day.

If you were getting stuck on the Mojang logo while loading, your problem should be fixed once you update to 5.0.1.

I am planning to add the ability to register a chunk as yours. It's not primarily for protection, but rather for performance reasons. Over time, people come, play, and build machines, but while they may get bored of Minecraft and leave, their machines still keep running (when in a loaded chunk). As you can imagine, over several months, especially on busy tracks of land, the performance requirements to keep everything running becomes fairly demanding. Circuits now account for a significant portion of CPU time. The easy solution is to reset the world, but that's not an option at this time.

The idea is then to automatically disable certain machines in chunks owned by players that are no longer active. Each chunk will have one registered owner, but they may also have a friends list attached to them. It will be possible to later take control of a chunk owned by someone else if the chunk's friend list contains the new owner as a manager of that friends list. Circuits outside a registered chunk will not run at all. However, not all things will be disabled, as pipes often need to stretch over long distances, so it will be limited to certain active components (timers, pumps, etc.). It may also apply to chunk loaders.

Everyone will at first be able to register one chunk for free. Later on, if you stick around, you will get 3 or more chunks for free. Beyond that though, registering a chunk will likely cost a non-refundable fee of 64 coal, or equivalent.

Once this is implemented, I will be able to re-enable monsters. If protection is enabled for these chunks, it will likely be protection only above a certain Y coordinate, so you will not run into issues while mining underground.

Any suggestions or comments?
