I've updated Vincent to Minecraft 1.4.2. There is also a new Vincent client update.

HOWEVER, I accidentally deleted Minecraft 1.3.2 while it was still running, while I was updating to 1.4.2, so I had to rebuild the server from backups. I used backups that are up to four hours old, but we also have the block log, which means we can roll back any progress you've made up to the latest version (just ask a moderator).

Here's the status on the servers:
  • Where's Vincent 1.4? We depend on a server modification called Bukkit, but it's moving kind of slowly and it's not quite ready for MC 1.4. However, I'm going to test it this weekend to see whether it is in a reasonably working condition so that we can update. Worst case scenario is that everything breaks, but we'll see!
  • Where's Alice 1.4 (or 1.3)? Unfortunately, it appears that the Bukkit+Forge combination that we use is mostly likely a dead endeavor. Forge is required to most of the addons that we use, and Bukkit is required for a few addons, and all our important server administrative functions. From this point on, to make Alice what Alice is, we would have to switch fully to Forge, but that is complicated by the fact that the important bits we rely on reside only in Bukkit space. Fortunately, most of those important bits are mine, and I've discussed a few things with a Forge developer and there's some eventual plans that should allow us to move over, eventually. Everything's kind of still up the air, and not all the mods we use are even available for 1.4 (or even 1.3), so even if we could switch tomorrow, we'd have to drop some of the big mods that you currently use (and also forego any reasonable protection from annoying people).

I got an idea:

Redesign the frontpage of the site to be a much splashier page, and have a textbox where you enter a player name and a "play" button. This immediately whitelists you but only into a 'trial mode' where you are restricted as to where you can go and where you can build (not near spawn, definitely). For the most part, you can still use most of the server's features, but you will be restricted. The trial period will last about a week. After that, you need to apply and get accepted if you want to continue playing.

Currently the remaining issues includes what to do to prevent chat spam (without entirely blocking chat), and issues of that nature.

An issue is with Alice though, because that requires a fair more amount of pain.

Any suggestions?

Hello dear people of the SKCraft universe!

A little while ago the idea was suggested to make a podcast (sort of), in which you all can raise your voice to make the server better. TexasGamer and I decided to take it on us to create this, and it's finally done!

Tomorrow will be the first podcast, with as topic the mods on Alice! You can suggest topics being discussed at this link, or below in the comments.

The podcast will start at...

12 AM (Noon) - Chicago
6 PM - London
7 PM - Berlin

And a nice little countdown...

To participate:
  • Download TeamSpeak
  • Join gkcraft.zapto.org at the time above
    • Thanks to gknova61 for hosting!

The episode will be recorded and posted on SKCraft.com, YouTube, iTunes (hopefully), and the SKCraft Android application (coming soon).

We hope to see you tomorrow!

Vincent has a new server texture pack! It's 32x32 and thus requires HD texture support, but if you use the launcher, you will already have support. Please enable the texture pack so that we have a baseline theme to go by.

In addition, 'aggressive snow' is back. If you leave your doors open, you might find a little snow indoors. In addition, placing torches or plants out in the open isn't recommended unless it is high up away from any surface.
